Last Chance to Enter my Birthday Contest - Contest Now Closed

Hello all! It's a bit overcast today but that's Michigan for you. Wait five minutes, the sun might come out...or it might snow, lol. One thing you can count on, though, is a good read if you pick up my award winning novel Heartstone.

Or you could win a trade size copy by entering my contest (details are below). In the meanwhile, here's a snippet to whet your appetite.

"Open your eyes, sweetling. Look at me." Eric's voice held a gentle command she couldn't refuse. The soft firelight played across his features, limning them with sensual shadows. His crystal bright eyes caught and held hers with a heat that should have scorched her to the bone.
Instead, it warmed her to her soul. No one had ever made her feel more desirable, more feminine, than Eric. No one had ever made her feel more cherished. She wanted more than anything to please him, to give him everything that she had and more. She wanted him inside her with a burning, yearning intensity that bordered on fear. Not fear of Eric, she would never be afraid of him, but of herself. Of the way her flesh tingled where he touched her, of the way her heart matched the rhythm of his. Of the way her love felt like sunshine warming her after a long dreary day.
"Is something wrong?" Eric asked, tenderly brushing his lips across her mouth. He took a deep breath. "We can stop if you want. But tell me now because in another moment, I won't promise that I'll be able to."

Mmm, it gets a bit intense after that so we'll just stop there ;-)

I'll be guest blogging at Sapphire Phelan's site this Friday and if you visit there, you'll have a bonus chance to enter the drawing. Friday morning I'll post a link here so you can stop by to get the details.

Heartstone Excerpt - Contest Now Closed

Good morning! Here's another excerpt from my award winning novel, Heartstone. Enjoy and don't forget to enter my Birthday contest for the chance to win a signed copy of Heartstone. Details on how to enter are below.

Set Up: En route to the Nexus Portal on Neraldi, Eric tells Keriam why she's so important to him and his people. He still denies the GarJa bond, a soul deep connection between a warrior and his mate, between them but even so she's creeping into his heart and it scares him to death,

The woman reached inside her shirt and withdrew a thin gold chain. At the end of it hung a dark red jewel. "It's all I have of her, of our life before...."
Slowly, she pulled the chain over her head and held the stone in her palm. "She never took it off. She called it a legacy, said I was to have it when she..."
Her head came up, her eyes shone wetly. "We always thought it was just a garnet but if...if--" She thrust it at him. "Take it."
She dropped it into his outstretched hand. Eric examined the thumb-sized gem, then pulled the Gatefold key out of his shirt. The green stone glowed but the red one sat inert in his hand. "This has no power. It isn't the Heartstone."
"It's all she had."
He shrugged, ignoring the bitter stab of disappointment. "Then it must still be on Purlea."
With care, Keriam replaced the necklace around her neck and tucked it under her shirt. "Then I can go home?"
"Not until I have the Stone. Not until the Gawan-spawn on Earth are removed." He refused to look at her because he refused to admit the possibility that he needed her to find the Heartstone. "We still have a long journey ahead of us."
He laid his own blanket down on the hard ground. Stretching to his full length, he shoved his hands under his head and stared at the sky. As a child, he had often slept under the stars, watching them pinwheel over Antiare. As an adult, he had slept under alien skies between battles with the Gawan. Neither compared to the erotic sounds of a woman settling down for the night not two arm-lengths away.
Twisting, he saw she had positioned herself so that they were lying nearly head-to-head. For a moment, he stared mesmerized by the glimmer of firelight on her hair, the exotic, heady scent of her filling his senses. And deep within him, his heart paused, then gave one great stroke as if striking a huge sonorous bell.
His nerves, exposed, left him over-sensitized and defenseless. He yearned to reach out, to stroke those fire-lit curls. Instead, he turned, staring into the flames, and remained perfectly still.
From the depths of the forest, he heard the shrill cry of a predator, then the feather soft rustle of Keriam's blanket.
"What was that?"
"A night hunter. No threat to us, Keriamsadhe." He twisted to look at her. Studying her tense features for a moment, he deliberately lightened his voice to ask, "Are you afraid?"
Flicking a sharp look in his direction, she pulled the blanket up to her chin and grumbled, "I've been attacked by a mutant, kidnapped by a werewolf and nearly eaten by a psychedelic cow. What do you think?"
"I could protect you better if you were over here," he suggested, waggling his eyebrows and patting the ground beside him.
She gave him an arch look. A look wholly ruined by the upward twitch of her lips. He found himself grinning at the twinkle in her eyes as she lifted a stout branch from the folds of her blanket. "Don't worry. I've got a weapon. And I know how to use it."
She settled down once more. Minutes later, her breath evened, deepened as she fell asleep. Eric turned onto his side and rested his head on his arm, aware his breath had slowed to match hers, aware that his senses encompassed her.
He denied the emotion welling up in his chest but it was too late. It existed, warm and soothing.
And deeply painful.
The idea that he would have to take her to Gawan-infested Purlea left him sickened. He was not like her uncle, Benamont I'sadhe. He did not relish the idea of taking an innocent woman to an almost certain death.

Long before Helim rose over the horizon, Eric gave up. Undressing quickly, he shifted. In his alter-form, he raced into the dark woods, knowing no matter how far he went, he had already been doomed. The thought raised the hair on his back.

Excerpt - Heartstone - Contest Now Closed

Good morning! I thought I'd give you an excerpt for Heartstone and start a new contest. Enjoy!

Set Up:

In the small Michigan town of Roseberg, Keriam Norton and her cousin, Janna, are preparing a grand opening of their store, The Treasure Chest. This is quite a feat for Keriam since she can't bear to be touched. When she's touched, she imagines she can feel the emotions of the person who touches her and she fears she's losing her mind. Still, she refuses to fail her cousin and her store. She doesn't have to touch anyone to make change or arrange items in the store. Then something gives Keriam pause...

“It’s beautiful.” Keriam focused on the display, on the wedding
dress with its yards of lace, fighting the rush of anxiety and joyous
anticipation Janna was feeling. It would be worse if Janna actually
touched her, she knew, and kept a careful distance between them.
“Now. Let’s get ready for hordes of customers to make us filthy rich.”

“In your dreams,” Janna said, laughing. As she passed through
the door, she added, “Mine, too.”

Keriam stopped as the weight of unseen eyes danced over her
skin like thorny little ant-feet. She whirled, taking in the entire street
with a sweeping glance.

Roseberg’s small business district, composed of ancient brick
storefronts, would soon be bustling but now was serenely quiet.
And yet...

Someone was watching her.

Across the street, a large black dog sniffed a reproduction coach
lamp near the curb. Keriam dismissed the animal, letting her gaze
move toward the intersection. A shadow, long and sharp in the sun’s
slanting rays, moved and vanished before Keriam could identify it.
No faces pressed against the glass of the shops lining Main Street.
There was no traffic.

Her attention returned to the dog. It sat, tongue lolling, tail idly
sweeping the sidewalk. It had a feral tilt to its pale eyes that made
her think wolf. Which was ridiculous, there weren’t any wolves in
this part of Michigan.

Then...expectancy flashed through her body, heightening her
perception. From the east came the scent of the pig farms and the
rendering plant, faint but distinguishable to her acute senses. Automobile
fumes from the highway drifted, mingling with the occasional
perfume of green, growing things from the surrounding farmlands.
A silent call hung in the cool, morning air and she let the door close
without going inside. She shut her eyes, fighting the urge to follow
the call, to abandon Janna and the store.

A single, deep bark cut through the wild sensations and, as if
a door slammed shut, the scents were gone, the call silenced. Her
heart skipped a beat, then skittered like a wild thing. These episodes
were coming far too often. And too powerfully. How long before she
could no longer fight them?

How long before she lost her mind?

“Hey,” Janna spoke from the doorway. “Something wrong?”

“No.” Keriam shook her head, forcing a smile. “No. Nothing. I
was just...daydreaming. Come on. There’s still a lot to do.”

Happy April Fool's Day! - Contest Now Closed

April is my favorite month of the year. Seriously. Yes, my birthday is in April but that's not the reason (though birthday gifts are a big plus ;-D) April also offers the return of mild or warmer weather, budding flowers and trees, birdsong, longer days, SUNSHINE! By the time April rolls around, I am ready for all of that and more. I"m ready to start working on my garden, both the decorative flower garden and the vegetable garden. I start planning what I want to grow and how I'll use it.

But aside from all that fabulous stuff, April is also home to one of the most light-hearted holidays -April Fool's Day. I seem to always get caught by at least one simple little prank (plastic dog poo or vomit doesn't do it anymore but I fall for others fast). This year, I've got my eye on a little retaliation.

Pranks:

1) Put a piece of bubblewrap under the toilet seat so when your victim sits, they are surprised by a loud POP! (Definitely doing this one!)

2) Find an old bottle of nail polish that you don't want anymore. Unscrew the cap and set it sideways on a piece of waxed paper, letting the contents flow out into a puddle. When it dries completely, peel it off of the paper. Now you can put it anywhere and trick someone into thinking there is spilled nail polish. Works best on something your victim cherishes or on one of their important documents!

3) Find a scrap of cloth. Place a dollar on the floor and stay nearby. When the victim comes by and bends down to pick up the dollar, rip the cloth loudly. Most people will reach back to see if they ripped their pants. One of the original classic April Fool's pranks of all time!

Now, if pranks and jokes aren't your thing, stop by Star-Crossed Romance and check out my review of Merely Magic by Patricia Rice http://star-crossedromance.blogspot.com/2011/04/review-merely-magic.html

and Skylar has an interesting post on Rejection and how it affects her writing as well as her passion for walking/running to raise money for cancer awareness/treatments.
