Coronation of King Robert I of Scotland

When I was in the process of writing ALTERED DESTINY, I did a lot of research into Scotland and its customs. While I didn't use this fact, it's one of many that I found fascinating.

Coronation 1306, Scone, Scotland

The Stone of Destiny stolen by Edward 1. The Earl of Fife imprisoned. His 21yr old daughter, Isabella hurried to Scone in his place, found Robert already crowned. The ceremony was performed again. Such was the importance of the Earl of Fife's role.

Workshop: What the Action Heroine Knows, and the Writer Should: Martial Arts, Fighting and Weapons

\\***** Permission to Forward Granted and Encouraged *****//

What the Action Heroine Knows, and the Writer Should: Martial Arts, Fighting and Weapons – Presented by Rob Preece

Conflict brings story to life, and physical conflict adds to a story's visceral impact. Most writers, however, are not street fighters and sometimes describe unworkable fight scenarios or overly-generic situations. In this interactive workshop, Black belt and writer Rob Preece helps writers come up with fight scenes that work (both from a physical and story perspective), that appeal to the reader's imagination, and that go beyond the cliche of the knee in the groin. The workshop describes various martial arts training your character might have experienced, traditional and non-traditional weapons they might use. By the time you've completed this workshop, you'll be thinking about physical conflict and fight scenes in the same way you do love scenes--as a chance to further the story, add characterization, create a physical and mental reaction in the reader, and enhance the reader's suspension of disbelief. Like love scenes, fight scenes make up the story, they can't just be tagged on.

We all know that stories have a beginning, middle and an end, but the character who starts out your story is going to be a lot different by the time the story ends. Characters grow, change and develop over the course of a good book. How does that happen and how can you build a character that will fully develop before the reader's eyes? Why do you even need a character arc? How does it coincide with the story arc? Join two published authors and teachers for a week-long class as they take you along the ups and downs of the Character Arc and see how to make your character grow so that by the time the story ends, the final determination will be believable and inevitable.

Workshop: From Austen to Aliens: How to Create the Classic Tough Chick

From Austen to Aliens: How to Create the Classic Tough Chick -- Presented by Jacqui Jacoby

In order to ensure proper credit when paying for a workshop registration fee by PayPal, you must indicate what the payment is for in the message portion of the PayPal transaction at the time you pay. Thank you.

As a martial artist, I am interested in self-defense and how women are portrayed in the media. At first, it seemed as if it was only Hollywood showing women in a tough light. With heroines such as Sarah Conner of the Terminator movies, and Ellen Ripely in the Alien films, women were the ones saving the day when men were being blown up or eaten. Now, with the introduction of such lines as Bombshell, it appears the romance writing industry is following suit. While attending the National Conference in Reno, I was able to meet with people in the industry who share my view that heroines in today's market can be tough. People such as Natashya Wilson, Senior Editor of the Bombshell line; Vicki Hinze, author of books featuring tough chick heroines; and Suzanne Brockmann, best selling author of tough characters. This workshop would cover such topics as how to portray tough chick heroines. Not just illustrating self-defense techniques, but how to build a tough chick heroine from the inside out. What kind of women make up the tough chicks and what are they like in their everyday lives? What drives them to become tough? What kind of hero must stand beside her and what kind of villains will she face? According to former Bombshell editor Julie Barrett, tough chick heroines are not going anywhere. They are here to stay and it's up to today's romance writers to portray them in an accurate light.

Workshop: Faeries and Dragons Along the Silk Road and Beyond

Faeries and Dragons Along the Silk Road and Beyond with Jacquie Rogers' and Eilis Flynn

In order to ensure proper credit when paying for a workshop registration fee by PayPal, you must indicate what the payment is for in the message portion of the PayPal transaction at the time you pay. Thank you.

Faeries and dragons can be found in many places, in ways you may not expect. The term “faery” itself is definitely of European origin, but the concept of supernatural or elemental spirits who are both of the world and who are not can be found all over the world, while the concept of the dragon plays and has played an important part in cultures around the world, ranging from the legend of Quetzalcoatl to the Chinese dragon. The names may change, but whatever you call them, faeries and dragons have been both kind and mischievous, good and evil, sometimes a symbol and sometimes one of chaos. We are going to take you a quick trip, starting with faeries for the first half of class, and finishing up with dragons. The Silk Road we’ll be traveling goes all the way around the world, and we’re going to start in the most unlikely of beginnings: Hollywood.
